Massage Therapy, Stress and Relief

Are you desperate to relieve stress? We hear about it on a daily basis, we experience it on a daily basis and stress is always shown in a negative light. However, sometimes stress is extremely necessary for our survival. It's that reaction that helps you catch that antique vase before it smashes into a thousand pieces. It's that last minute swerve that helps you avoid a devastating car accident and that feeling of being "pumped up" before an important meeting or that big date. So, stress isn't all that bad. It's the fight or flight instinct which has helped the survival of humanity, making it pretty important. However, too much of one thing is never good. Continued, compounding stress can lead to a host of debilitating conditions and as a result many people trawl the internet and page through self help books on a daily basis in order to uncover foolproof methods on how to relieve it.

When we are stressed or in a stressful situation, hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine mobilize energy from storage to our muscles, launching us into fight or flight mode. When we are engaged in this state for too long however, there are notable increases in our heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. At the same time our digestive, reproductive, growth and immunity systems all shutdown. Continuous stress can therefore result in depleted energy supplies, hypertension, ulcers, a decrease in testosterone in males and irregular menstrual cycles in women, depression, sleep deprivation, and other conditions. So, a little bit of stress is necessary but if it persists it can be incredibly unhealthy. If you find yourself suffering from any of the aforementioned conditions then follow these relief tips.

Stress relief has always been synonymous with massage therapy. The good news is that this isn't one of those urban myths that have been misleading people for years because massage therapy is extremely beneficial as a natural stress reliever. Massage therapy has been proven to increase relaxation and decrease blood pressure, two vital components in stress relief. In fact, a half hour massage has been proven to decrease cortisol levels. Obviously if you decrease abundance the stress hormone then you decrease stress itself! The removal of excess cortisol will make you feel happier, more relaxed and will contribute towards a healthier lifestyle. Think about it: If you wanted to know how to relieve stress you'd have to rectify the chemical imbalance that is causing it, right? Research has shown that a good massage can help your body to release those "feel good" chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins include serotonin and dopamine which contribute to feelings of relaxation, calm and are active agents in stress relief. When it comes to natural relievers a massage is right at the top of the list. Massage therapy doesn't only release important endorphins but it also increases relaxation and decreases blood pressure levels and insulin levels.

Still wondering how to relieve stress? If a half an hour massage can drastically decrease your cortisol levels, decrease stress and increase a feeling of wellbeing just imagine what an hour long session could do, or an hour and a half session? Incorporating a massage into your weekly routine is well worth the rewards that you receive. Think of it as an investment in your body, your return being a healthy, stress free lifestyle. Invest in a healthy future. Relax with a professional massage and see fantastic results in vitality in both your physical and mental wellbeing. Massage can also go beyond stress relief and it combats anxiety, depression, increases energy levels and improves blood circulation.

For a healthier, more enjoyable lifestyle experiment with natural stress relievers such as massage therapy. Increase your energy levels and improve physical and mental performance when you treat yourself to any form of massage. Whether it's a shiatsu, Swedish, hot stone, it doesn't matter! All massages are beneficial and effective when it comes to stress relief.

The Health Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

There was a time when the thought of a massage would bring a spa to mind. A luxurious setting in a health club or at an upscale resort may come to mind. Times have changed and so has deep tissue massage therapy.

There is a variety of massage types. The general term means the manipulation and rubbing of the skin, tendons, muscles and ligaments. Therapists generally use their hands and fingers for massage, but may also incorporate the use of elbows and forearms to achieve the desired result.

Deep tissue massage uses a more forceful approach. The slow, forceful technique is used to target those layers of connective tissue and muscle that are deeper in the body. This is usually the method chosen for the relief of damage due to injuries. Deep muscle massage concentrates on realigning the deeper layers of muscle. While many of the movements are the same, the strokes are slower and deeper.

Although massage has been considered an alternative type of medicine in the past, it is becoming increasingly popular among professionals for relief of many conditions and various situations. People who have subscribed to the use of deep muscle massage will be quick to tell you of its many benefits.
Deep tissue massage breaks down the adhesions (bands of rigid, painful tissue) and consequently relieves pain and allows the client to restore natural movement.

During the massage, the client may experience some discomfort due to the pressure applied. The client needs to tell the therapist when the pain or discomfort is beyond their personal comfort zone.

The problems that are generally dealt with during deep tissue massage are:

1. Limited mobility due to injury or disease process

2. Chronic pain

3. Carpal tunnel syndrome and other injuries that may be caused by repetitive movement

4. Osteoarthritis

5. Whiplash, sports injuries or falls

6. Fibromyalgia

7. Muscle spasm

During the massage, the therapist will ask you to take deep breaths. This is done at certain points of the massage when the therapist is working on specific areas. The process will release metabolic waste substances from the muscles. It is important to drink a large amount of water following the massage. This will flush the waste from the system.

If you have never had a deep tissue massage, be aware that you should not eat a heavy meal prior to your appointment. You should arrive 5 minutes early so you can have a few minutes to rest and relax before starting the massage.

Why Relaxation Is So Important

If you feel overwhelmed and overtired a lot of the time and never take any time away from work or domestic chores then what you need is more relaxation in your life. You may be horrified at the suggestion and tell me that there is far too much to do but there are positive advantages of making relaxation a regular part of your day to day activities that I urge you to do more or some if you don't relax ever at the moment.

Why is relaxation so important?

It gives your body a chance to renew itself.

Quite literally when you are relaxed you give your heart and other internal organs a chance to renew and re-build their structure.

You rest your heart and breathing

When you are fully relaxed your breathing becomes very slow and shallow and your heart rate slows down and your blood pressure lowers too. All of these give your body a chance to rest and recover from whatever activity you have been doing. If you have been using your muscles strenuously and there has been a build up of lactic acid in them then a periods of relaxation will help to remove this and allow your muscles to recover.

It allows your mind to rest

During relaxation you can let your thoughts and worries float away. When you do this perhaps by concentrating on your breath going in and out slowly you may also find that suddenly a thought comes into your mind which is an answer to some problem you've been puzzling over for some time.

It allows you to connect with your spiritual side.

You may or may not be part of formal religion but when you are in a state of relaxation you may become away of the power of nature or a higher force or being, according to your beliefs. This can help to give you a sense of proportion and meaning and enable you to think about your life and what you hope to achieve with all your rushing about. As a result at the end of some relaxation you will feel refreshed and calmer and more able to face the trials and tribulations of your day and also to get things more in proportion in relation to their importance within the grand scheme of the universe.

So remember relaxation is very important. Relax for a few minutes every day and you will soon feel the benefits.

Massage Can Be A Great Treatment for Neck Pain

Massage and Neck Pain Treatment

Massage therapy can provide relief for neck pain, especially in people with chronic tightness and soreness in their neck and shoulders. We find many people who carry their stress in their neck and shoulders. They begin to contract their neck muscles and tense their shoulders. Some people describe their shoulders moving towards their ears, which gets worse with stress or activity. Increased physical activity can make it worse such as taking care of the kids, lifting, reaching, or pulling. Driving or sitting for long hours at the computer can really aggravate neck and shoulder pain.

Increasing neck pain is very prevalent in people with "knots" in their muscles that never go away. These knots are areas of muscle that has become injured and "glued" together. The knots are actually scar tissue that prevent muscles from moving and sliding like it should. Over time the amount of scar tissue accumulates and the knots get bigger. Eventually, the knots become a weak point, and any amount of excessive activity aggravates these spots.

Muscle and Scar Tissue Pain

People tend to describe knots as the source of their pain. If they have a hard week or two of childcare, work, or house work those knots begin to get sore. With increased stress muscle pain begins to radiate from the knots to the head or shoulder. In some people the pain goes down their back.

The pain is decreased with icing and massage. Many people constantly ask their spouses to rub their shoulders. With a little rest and ice the pain decreases. However, the shoulder pain can quickly begin again with increased activity.

The shortened knots of muscle affect joints too. Because the affected muscle is functionally shorter and pulling on the joints, it increases the stress on the joints. Many people experience neck pain or headaches as a result of muscle knots. The shortened muscle changes normal movements and structural stress loads, which aggravates and injures joints. Many tension headaches or migraine headaches develop this way.

Massage Therapy Decreases Neck & Shoulder Pain

Massage therapy is effective at decreasing muscle spasms and decreasing the size of the knots. Therapeutic massage can help break up scar tissue and muscle adhesions. This is why massage is recommended treatment for muscle pain, neck pain, back pain, and low back pain.

A trained and experienced therapist will work on the neck and shoulder muscles. Often those knots begin affecting how the scapula (shoulder blade) moves. A really good therapist will work on improving scapular motion and all the muscles associated with its movement. This would include the pectoral muscles of the chest that attach to the front of the scapula.

Massage therapy is an effective treatment for neck pain. It helps decrease muscle spasms and break up scar tissue that has accumulated from daily stress and strain. Some people feel a decrease in headache symptoms within a visit or two.

Look for trained therapists who are experienced in working with these types of injuries. Not all therapists are equal in this regard.
