The Three Common Types of Spa Treatment

There are many types of spa treatments a spa center has to offer. Three of the common spa treatments are facial treatments, skin treatments, and massage treatments.

Facials are basically designed to give the face and neck area a thorough clean and hydration. Thus, spa facial treatments are treatments designed to benefit your face as well as add a glow to it since the dead skin cells from your face's surface would be removed. Its packages usually consist of the basic cleansing of skin, a steam bath, and a facial massage. This will then be followed by the application of hypoallergenic moisturizers on the face and neck so they do not dry out from the previous processes. From here, the specialty of it's the spa center's package varies. You could be given paraffin facials, where a layer of paraffin mask is applied to your face so that your face would be able to absorb and seal in nutrients from certain creams. Another type of facial you could be given is an aromatherapy, which oil rejuvenates the skin. As for collagen facials, a collagen mask is applied to promote skin cells to grow.

On the other hand, spa skin treatments focus on the skin of your body. There are many types of different treatments for this area. Like the facial spa treatment, your skin will first be cleansed. From there on, your treatment differs based on the center's selection of treatments. One type is the body scrub, where gentle abrasives like salt or crushed nuts would be used to slough off the dead skin cells of your skin's surface as well as improve circulation. Another option of skin treatment would be body wraps, where your body will be slathered with therapeutic creams and then wrapped with a blanket for certain duration.

Lastly is the spa massage treatment. This type of spa is popular with both men and women. There are many types of massages available, but not all is preferred by everyone. Some massages are gentle, which focuses on the touch on certain areas to regulate blood flow to the areas. On the other hand, there are those that require much strength and pressure, which knead your muscles up to your bones. Consult a spa center on which treatment suits you best, and you will walk out refreshed.

How Can A Massage Help Me Sleep?

It is one of our natural tendencies to rub someone when they are having a hard time sleeping. One of the most concrete examples to back up this claim is the way we gently stroke the head of babies, or rub their backs to make them fall asleep. Admittedly, rubbing or touching is a natural and instinctive way to soothe and relax. And isn't it that rubbing and touching is what a massage is all about?

There are many articles and scientific journal entries that discuss how a massage, massage therapy, or therapeutic massage can help us relax. Even just one session of massage therapy already has an impact on our body and how it works. Here is the picture: humans are born with a parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system. These two balances each other out. When we are stressed, our sympathetic system is activated making us feel the urge to fight, flight, or move restlessly. On the other hand, when we have a massage, our parasympathetic system is activated allowing our bodies to relax. What is the connection between this and our topic? Simply put, common sleep disorders are usually caused by stress and tension. And if these are the reasons why you are not sleeping very well every night, then you might be pleased to know that one of the benefits of massage therapy is improved sleep patterns. And this is true. In fact, there are some people who actually fall asleep while having a session at their massage spa.

Quite a number of people have claimed that they have slept well after receiving regular sessions of massage therapy and reflexology. Several studies also support the claim on how massage therapy does more than reducing incidences of back pain, body pain, and headaches. These studies also showed that therapeutic massage also helped patients sleep better due to lessened anxiety and depression. Another interesting massage study reported that critically ill patients claimed experiencing improved sleep patterns, both in the quality and quantity of sleep, compared to those patients who received only relaxation exercises.

So whether you are experiencing sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, or restless leg syndrome, there is a therapeutic massage technique that can help you. According to a professional massage therapist from leading massage spa in Sarasota, Florida, people increasingly avail of their Swedish massage, sports massage, pregnancy massage, deep tissue massage, and reflexology services because they want to be soothed and relaxed.

Here are the basic description of each massage therapy treatment:

- Swedish massage is a massage therapy technique that uses variations of long gliding strokes, kneading, and friction techniques on surface muscles. Strokes used in Swedish massage generally goes with the direction of blood flow toward the heart. Swedish massage is commonly availed by people who wants to experience relaxation, improve circulation and range of motion, as well as relieve muscle tension.

- Deep tissue massage is a massage therapy technique aimed at reaching the muscles way below the surface level. Chronic patterns of muscular tension usually happens at the deep connective tissues and this is the area targeted by deep tissue massage. With the use of slow strokes, direct and firm pressure, as well as friction techniques directed across the area of the body experiencing chronic muscle pain, deep tissue massage is effective in relieving chronic muscular tension and pain.

- Sports massage is a massage therapy technique that uses massage strokes similar to those used during a Swedish massage and deep tissue massage. The difference is that sports massage is specially adapted to deal with the effects of athletic performance on the body, as well as the needs of athletes regarding training, performing, and recovery from injury.

- Pregnancy massage is a massage therapy technique specially adapted to suit the delicate conditions of soon to be mothers. It uses the gentlest forms of massage strokes. A go signal form a medical practitioner is necessary before a woman can avail of pregnancy massage. Pregnancy massage is very effective in relieving back pain, leg cramps, and other discomforts associated with pregnancy.

Discovering Happiness Through Rest and Relaxation

To experience life at it best and live a life full of peace and contentment, you need to make a conscious effort to bring some down time into your day and be in the moment with assorted techniques related to rest and relaxation. Once you feel the deep satisfaction from really enjoying a peaceful moment or two every day, you will attain a deeper connection with yourself that can ultimately be the source of a firm and unwavering feeling of happiness with life.

Relaxation techniques release stress and strain from our body and ease our minds, freeing both to function at their best.

  • When you are troubled or worried, take a few minutes to focus on the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. Feel the temperature sensations of your breath. Bring your breath all the way to your ribs and notice your rib cage expanding and contracting. Try to breath with this focus for 5-10 minutes.
  • Listening to water, in its many forms, is a relaxing way to connect with nature. Close your eyes and be still in a quiet place. Focus on the sound of raindrops hitting a roof, rain gushing from an eaves trough, water connecting with water at a waterfall, water trickling against a fountain or a rivers current pushing water over rocks. Listening to rain or water will generally be one of those spontaneous moments of relaxing - you must take the moment when it comes, not just create the moment when you make time for it. Although natural is always better, there are some great CD's of rain, thunderstorms and flowing water that still provide that nurturing spirit of nature.

Build rest into your life and you will give yourself more quality time for enjoying the good things in life. Rest can mean going to bed early or sleeping in whenever you can. This is short term resting. It is also important to plan some lengthier resting, such as an extended weekend where you sleep as long as your body wants and you're able to do the things that are pleasurable and calming for you.

These techniques will help you in connecting the spiritual, mental and physical elements of yourself. By having a deeper connection with your whole self you are better able to connect with the people and situations in life that will bring you a deep seated joy that can't be diminished by external circumstances.

Stephanie's connection to nature and its life enhancing gifts have been the inspiration to help others connect and care for the outdoors and in turn connect and care for themselves. Popular Types Of Massage To Help You Relax

Most people will turn to massage therapy to relax and revitalize their tired bodies and for that there are different types of massage one can choose from. You may not know it but actually there are over a hundred different types of massage, which means that your choice is not limited to the more common ones.
Through the years people have come up with different ways to improve or to develop variations with massage techniques infusing Eastern techniques with the Western techniques. But whichever technique you decide to have, massages in general are beneficial to both your mind and your body.

Some of the health benefits one can get from different massage techniques are: improved blood circulation, relief from tension headaches and detoxification among others. To give you an idea of the massage therapies you should try, here are other popular types of massage that is sure to help you find harmony within your body.

1. Swedish massage is perhaps the most popular choice for a massage therapy. It involves kneading and circular movements using smooth strokes to help penetrate through the muscles. This type of massage may either use oils or lotions for skin application to help with the massage strokes.

If you are in your menopausal years and you are looking for ways to relieve you from menopausal symptoms you would probably turn to modern medicine but if you are looking towards the alternative solution then you should try Swedish massage because it is not only good for tensed muscles it is also good for relieving anxiety, depression and other psychological symptoms associated with menopause.

2. Next on the list is called deep tissue massage. This massage uses deep pressure targeted across the affected muscles to relieve stress and tension, which is important to regain normal movements that is movements without the pain and stiffness. It is especially recommended for those who are recovering from injuries like whiplash and sports injuries and those with postural problems.

3. If you find bathing in warm water soothing then you should try hot stone massage also known as warm stone massage that commonly uses basalt, a type of stone, basically because of its smoothness. It is one of the various types of massage that utilizes indigenous materials in administering the massage.

It is a good application immediately before performing traditional massage to help loosen up tensed muscles. You can also opt to have the stones run along your muscles instead of the therapists' hands if you find it more relaxing that way.

4. Pregnant women can also have massage sessions although they have to make sure that the massage therapist is well-trained in administering pre-natal massage since pregnancy is a special case to work on. Most pregnant women experience pains and discomfort and now that massage for them is possible they can experience less stress during their pregnancy.

5. Perhaps one of the massage therapies that have gained popularity recently is the aromatherapy massage. The therapeutic effects in this type of massage lies in the essential oils that the massage therapist uses for relaxation and to energize your mind and body.

There are other types of massage that uses techniques that you may never have seen or heard before. Trying other massage types will surely give your massage experience a new twist so explore and enjoy massages to help you deal with the stresses of everyday living.

Effects of Nature On Our Mental Health

What is nature and how does it affect our health? Well this is one major question that we are coming across these days in relation to have a proper mental health. If we try to understand the meaning of nature in terms of dictionary definition then it clearly states nature as the natural physical world including plants, animals and landscapes etc. It refers to the phenomena of the physical world. In general terms it is also referred to the method related with inanimate objects and the manner in which the particular kind of things exist and change of their own harmony.

Now looking at the present scenario, today if we try to relate the term nature in relation to health then it won't be wrong. Plants represent a vital element of the original ecological system in which the human species evolved. Perhaps the time has come when we all take a close look at the impact of nature on the health of communities and individuals. Since the evolution of life, the nature has always featured as key components in health promotion models. Our relationship with nature is like a basic component that helps in sustaining good health.

As per the recent study conducted in UK, it was found that more than 75% of people live in urban areas and as a result the detachment with nature has contributed to a drastic rise in mental health problems. Roger Ulrich one of the pioneers of research in this area conducted an experiment to explain that patients suffering and recovering from identical operations were more likely to recover quickly if they had a daily view of nature from their hospital beds.

Studies in this field have also shown that well-being and levels of psychological and physiological stress are significantly influenced by our natural surroundings. These days nature is widely used as an element or modern therapy for people who are suffering from physical and mental health problems. In order to improve your mood, now concepts like hospital therapy gardens, wilderness trips for people bearing from ruthless stress have all shown positive effects on patients. Moreover in past few years, it has also been found that horticultural therapy have a growing body of research data which points to the many mental benefits of engaging with nature.

Research from Netherland and Japan has also revealed that people living close to green ambience live longer and enjoy better and healthy life. A Swedish study concluded that if office personnel could view greenery through their office windows, then it further significantly reduce the stress during their working days.

Latest studies from Germany and Australia have also confirmed the capacity of ecosystem of plants to perform as powerful air purifiers. Virginia Lohr at Washington University performed a computer based test on students, and observed that the systolic blood pressure was lower, and measured the performance level. It was found that the reaction time during the test was higher, if plants were present in the computer lab.

From an economical point of view, it should be of great interest to establish a green surrounding that can benefit your mental health by providing opportunities to be physically active both in terms of physical and mental health.

Deep Tissue Massage vs. Swedish Massage | Deep Massage

Learn the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage from celebrity massage therapist Meagan Holub in this Howcast video.

The difference between Swedish massage and deep tissue massage, is Swedish massage is actually the base for deep tissue massage and deep tissue massage is delivered on a much deeper level. Swedish massage has some basic strokes, like effleurage and petrissage. With deep-tissue massage, you actually take those same modalities, and take them to a deeper level.

You can actually use other tools, instead of using just your hands, you can use your elbow. You can use your forearms. Things that will deliver a deeper amount of pressure, rather than just Swedish massage, which typically you would apply with your hands and your fingers. Many times when people request a Swedish massage, what they're asking for they often request a relaxation massage or something of this kind.

It's pretty much interchangeable. So Swedish massage is very relaxing. Deep tissue massage can also be very relaxing, I find if it's delivered by an expert that knows where that pain threshold is for you. Deep tissue massage, every once in a while someone will ask for deep pressure massage or harder pressure massage, or something like that, so that's what they're referring to.

What Does a Facial Do? Why Would I Need a Facial?

Many people think about having a facial, or arrive for a facial appointment, uncertain of the importance of this service - aside from its seemingly pampering nature. Truly, though, a facial is not a luxury, its benefits are far reaching. In order to understand why a facial is important, let's take a look at its components.

The basic parts of a facial are as follows:

- Determining Your Skin Type: It's important for you and your aesthetician to understand your skin type. By knowing this, products and techniques used can be specifically customized to meet your needs.

- Deep Cleansing: With the correct product, a gentle, but deep cleaning is obtained and, depending upon skin type, the correct pressure and movements can be employed to stimulate or calm. Steam and/or hot towels are often used to soften and expand the pores.

- Proper Exfoliation: I say "proper" because you can over-exfoliate. Skin must be manipulated with awareness so as to not cause unwanted reactions. This exfoliation may be done manually or chemically with the use of an electric brush, scrub, enzyme or acid.

- Taking Away: After cleansing and exfoliation, the skin is prepared for extraction - or cleansing of the pores.

- Giving Back: Now the skin is ready to receive vitamins, hydration and minerals in the form of serums, lotions, creams and masques applied with manual techniques or massage appropriate for your particular skin type.

- Additional Pleasures: During this process, you will often receive a hand and arm massage, a facial massage and a neck and shoulder massage.

Here's how I like to explain a facial: What is the one part of the body that is exposed most often? Your face.

The surface of our skin is dotted with tiny pockets called pores. These pores allow for the transfer of materials like sweat and oxygen into and out of the body. Oil glands, located within the pores, secrete sebum. Dust, pollution, free radicals, wind and sun are a constant source of irritants and debris that can stick to the oil or sebum on our skin. Since our skin grows from the inside to the outside, dead cells, though they act as protection from the sun, come to rest upon the surface too.

I like to compare the surface of our face to your stovetop. When you cook with oil and it spatters onto your stovetop, the surface becomes sticky and other matter - like dust - will cling to it. It works the same way with your face. Matter, including dirt, dust and dead skin cells, stick to your sebum, blocking the exit of your pore. The result is dull skin, or eventually a blackhead or pimple (pustule).

However, when you have a professional facial - that is, one performed by a licensed aesthetician - the dead skin cells, dirt, and debris may be removed. What's left is cleaner, shinier, healthier, newer skin that is able to breathe and do what skin is meant to do. The added bonus is a tremendous sense of well being and relaxation.

How often should you have a facial? Generally, every 8 - 10 weeks; however, you can certainly have them closer together, especially when working on a particular concern like acne, aging or sun damage. At the very least, it's good to try and have a facial once per season.

In conclusion, the answer to "Why Do I Need A Facial" is that generally, we aren't able to cleanse and exfoliate our skin the way that a professional aesthetician can, and the benefits are both tangible and esoteric.

How to Prepare for a Massage | Deep Massage

Learn how to prepare for a deep tissue massage from celebrity massage therapist Meagan Holub in this Howcast video.

As a client preparing for deep tissue massage you're going to prepare for it, much like any other massage. You basically get to just sit back and relax, and let the massage therapist work their magic. But there are a couple of things that a massage therapist is going to do to make sure that you are properly prepared for a deep tissue massage. It's a little bit different than a relaxation massage or a Swedish massage.

So they're actually going to prep your tissue with some Swedish massage strokes, some more relaxing strokes. This helps your tissue warm up, and it becomes a little more flexible. So that later when they access with those deeper strokes, your tissue is ready to allow it and it feels great and it's pain free. One of the things that many massage therapists suggest for you to do, is to stay well hydrated for a few days before the massage and afterwards. It helps keep your muscle tissue supple and soft. But I do suggest that you don't drink too much water right before you get on the table.

Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt? | Deep Massage

Find out if a deep tissue massage hurts from celebrity massage therapist Meagan Holub in this Howcast video.

So, to answer the question, “Does deep tissue massage hurt?” my immediate answer is, “It depends on who you’re getting the deep tissue massage from.”

I wish that I could say, “No, it doesn’t always hurt, ” but that’s not always true. So, I, I personally try to keep deep tissue massage from hurting, and I feel that most deep tissue massage experts do. And the way that we can do this is by accessing the tissue really slowly, really gently, and you get to much deeper layers if you do it that way.

There’s actually something called the “soul gel theory, ” which states that if you access the tissue very slowly, your tissue almost liquefies and you can get nice and deeply and the body doesn’t experience any pain. But if you try to go in fast and, and, access those deeper layers really quickly, your body’s going to resist just like it does with any sort of extreme pressure or, or, trauma to the area.

So, while there may be some discomfort, it’s actually really important for your massage therapist to be checking in with you and make sure that they’re asking you where your pain threshold is. And where they figure out where that threshold is where you’re sort of on the line between “hurts so good” and “hurts, ” they need to keep you right on that side of “hurts so good.”

3 Facts About Deep Tissue Massage - Benefits Compared to Swedish Massage

If you have been seeking massage therapy for aches and pains, you may want to consider getting deep tissue massage. Though the Swedish-style massage can be great for minor aches and pain, and is also great for relaxation, there are times when it just isn't enough. Deep tissue massage is more about therapy and healing than relaxation, and there is a reason why it works better than the Swedish type. You should consider that the problems you are having in association with chronic pain need a more advanced approach.

You may not hear much about deep tissue massage, but it is something that is used quite often to help athletes and others who have very physical jobs. Most injuries are not just surface injuries, and it is important to get to the root of the problem for real relief. Athletes are not the only ones who can benefit however, as there are many injuries that go deeper than the surface. If you have an office job where you must sit in front of a computer all day, or if you do a lot of repetitive motions for any reason, you are also at risk for this type of problem.

3 Things You Need to Know

1. How it Works

Deep tissue massage reaches core muscles that are often not stimulated through surface massage. These muscles may be in a state of agitation. These core muscles are important for posture, and when they are not loose and working well, you are going to have all sorts of problems. If you have a backache that won't go away, and regular massage doesn't seem to do much to help you, it means that the core muscles are in need of manipulation, and that is where deep tissue massage can help. You may find relief for many types of chronic pain through this type of massage, and once you find you are feeling better, you may kick yourself for not having tried it sooner.

2. What Results Should You Expect?

A therapist using deep tissue massage will have to apply more pressure to reach the muscle well below the surface. This means there is going to be more pain when you have treatment. This pain is temporary, and is letting you know that the proper tissues are being targeted. When muscles are bunched, the act of kneading and manipulating them will hurt. This pain is temporary, and depending on the state of your health, you should see results rather quickly. It is important that you keep up with your treatment if you want to see total and complete results.

3. Where Can You Go?

You may have to look hard to find a good deep tissue massage therapist. You generally won't find someone like this in a spa that specializes in Swedish massage, but it is not unheard of either. If you can't seem to find anyone, talk to your medical doctor. They may know of somewhere you can go. Though some doctors are iffy on recommending alternative therapies, many of them respect what deep tissue massage can do for the health and well-being of their patients.

How Plants Tell Time - Dasha Savage

Morning glories unfurl their petals like clockwork in the early morning. A closing white waterlily signals that it’s late afternoon. And moon flowers, as their name suggests, only bloom under the night sky. What gives plants this innate sense of time? Dasha Savage investigates how circadian rhythms act as an internal timekeeper for flora and fauna alike.

How Could Massage Benefit Your Health?

Cutting Down Cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone, often released as a response to high stress. As such, it's appropriately linked to all the health problems high stress levels offer, for instance anxiety or depression.

Massage is well known for reducing stress levels substantially, even in small doses. Fifteen minutes a week, or even a month can have a real benefit on your state of mind. Cortisol is noted in substantially reduced qualities in individuals who undergo massage, helping with the aforementioned issues.

Improving Immune System

Do you get mouth ulcers regularly? The mouth carries perhaps the most bacteria in the body, and one of the first signs of a weakened immune system is ulcers appearing in the mouth. If you've ever experienced a 'stress ulcer' then you'll know how massage can help you.

High levels of stress result in immune system failure, this is why stressed out individuals get struck down by mouth ulcers at the worst times, it's simply the first place the problem becomes visible. By cutting down your high stress levels, massage can keep your immune system functioning longer. Ulcers, colds, and general sickness are less likely to strike, and with any luck you'll enjoy a far healthier life.

Helping with Pain

Massage has long been used on sports injuries and the like, and it's no wonder why. Massage is noted to decrease stiffness considerably, and reducing pain by a respectable amount. It's a pleasant, drug-free way to get back on the horse after an unpleasant muscle injury, or simply if you're all bunched up after a stressful day.

In these cases you're likely to be seeing Deep or Sports massage, the gentler Swedish massage is more appropriate for simply relaxing the patient. And in terms of helping with pain, it's important to remember this is fairly limited to muscle pain. If you've got a fracture, burn or open wound, then massage risks being both a painful and dangerous experience.

Getting Alert

If you're in a high pressure environment, it's easy to feel the urge to just daze out for a little while and let the stresses fly by. Massage has been seen offering sincere aid to helping individuals stay alert. When a control group was tested against a massaged group in a 1996 TRI study, the massage-recipients answered questions faster and with greater accuracy.

So it's definitely worth giving massage a try, at least. If you've ever had problems with any of the above, then a relaxing appointment might be just the thing to get you back on your feet.

Charlotte Palmer is well aware of the advantages of massage to health, she used to tell her customers these advantages while massaging them in her therapeutic treatment hydraulic therapy couch, which was designed to give them maximum comfort.
